A great eight for Dalbeattie Star as they unveil new signings ahead of Lowland League campaign

Eight new players have checked in to Dalbeattie Star for the new season.

And there were some familiar names among the group announced by the club on Monday.

Dean Brotherston, Steven Degnan and Curtiss Telfer have all returned after spells away while Craig Fergusson has come out of retirement to help former team-mate and current manager Ritchie Maxwell.

A string of former Queen of the South youngsters have also joined the club.

Forward Declan Tremble had a successful loan spell with Abbey Vale last season, goalie Ryan Gibson arrives from Peterhead, Robbie Hogg joins from Lochmaben and former Threave Rovers man Phil Middlemiss has signed after a stint in Australia.

Maxwell said: “I knew we would be losing a few boys this season and we had to work to bring in quality and I think we have done that.

“All the boys that we have brought in have played at this level or have had really good seasons in the South and they are all looking to impress.

“We have boosted our attack with Steven and Dean and Declan Tremble played a few first team games at Palmerston last season.

“The Lowland League is getting a lot of publicity just now.

“It is part of the pyramid system and outside of the professional leagues it is the highest level you can play at.

“Some of these guys will be coming with a point to prove and may still think they should be playing with league clubs so, if they do well and impress, then they may get that opportunity to go back to that level.”

The plethora of new signings takes the size of the Star squad to more than 20 players but Maxwell isn’t too concerned.

He explained: “We were always looking to run with a bigger squad this season as we wanted competition for places.

“You can see the difference in pre-season and boys won’t be getting a game just by turning
up.

“As a manager, I want it to be difficult to choose a starting 11, or even an 18.

“Although it is a big squad, we would still sign someone if they improved us if they became available.”

Star played Heston Rovers in their first friendly on Tuesday night and host Seaham Red Star on Saturday with kick-off at 1.30pm.

On July 11, they play Threave with Bedlington Terriers visiting Islecroft two days later.

The new Lowland League season starts on July 27 with Star facing a challenging trip to ambitious Kelty Hearts.
