'A good boy at heart' Mum pays emotional tribute to son found dead in street on Easter Sunday

The mum of a man found dead in Airdrie has paid tribute to her ‘much-loved’ son.

Emergency crews raced to the High Street at around 4.40pm on Easter Sunday after reports of a disturbance.

Medical staff tried to save Peter McElroy’s life, but the 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland have released an emotional statement on behalf of his devastated mother Rose McElroy.

The 62-year-old said: “Peter was a good boy at heart who was loved dearly by all his family and friends.

“He will be sadly missed.”

It is the second tragedy to strike Peter Mcelroy's family in recent years.

His death came just days before the second anniversary of his sister Erin's passing.

Erin died on April 22, 2018, leaving mum Rose, of Craigneuk, Wishaw, heartbroken and struggling to pay for her funeral.

Cousin Siobhan said the heartbroken mum has only just paid off the bill.

On a fundraising page she has set up to help the family, she wrote: "I'm setting up this page with the blessing of my auntie Rose, in the most tragic circumstances my older cousin Peter McElroy was sadly taking from us yesterday at the age of 43.

"Peter has two sisters Ashleigh and Erin.

"My Auntie Rose has had a lot of heartache in recent years as my cousin Erin her youngest daughter also passed away a couple of years ago and my aunt has just recently payed off her funeral."

Gerard McGinley has appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday accused of murder.

The 38-year-old was also charged with possessing an offensive weapon.

Detective Inspector Frank Travers from the Major Investigations Team said: “We are grateful for the assistance we have received from the local community following this incident and will continue to carry out enquiries in the local area in the coming days. A full report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
