The New York Giants and their fans breathed a sigh of relief last year when long-time Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten decided to hang up his cleats and call it a career.
However, the reprieve will turn out to be a short one as the Cowboys announced on Thursday that Witten has unretired and re-signed with the team for the 2019 season.
“The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong,” Witten said in a statement. “This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship. This was completely my decision, and I am very comfortable with it. I’m looking forward to getting back in the dirt.”
Witten had officially announced his retirement last May before joining the broadcast booth of Monday Night Football, where he was clearly not a fit.
Instead of returning to the booth in 2019, Witten will re-join the NFC East where he will enter his 16th season of tormenting the Giants.
In 30 career games against the Giants, Witten has hauled in 154 receptions for 1,568 yards and 15 touchdowns. The 154 receptions and 15 touchdowns both represent career-best numbers against a single team, while his 1,568 yards are second only to his production against the Philadelphia Eagles (1,642).
