A German Life at the Bridge Theatre: A first look at Maggie Smith's return to the stage

The first production pictures of Maggie Smith in A German Life have been released.

The new one-woman play by Christopher Hampton opens Friday April 12 at the Bridge Theatre, directed by Jonathan Kent.

A German Life is based on the life and testimony of Brunhilde Pomsel, best known for working for Joseph Goebbels. She spoke to a group of Austrian filmmakers shortly before she died in 2017 about her struggle to make ends meet as a secretary in 1930s Berlin and her many employers, including a Jewish insurance broker and the Reich Minister for Propaganda.

This is the first time that Smith has been on the stage in 12 years, last appearing in Edward Albee’s The Lady From Dubuque at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

She has won multiple awards, including two Oscars, five Baftas, nine Evening Standard Theatre Awards and a Tony.

She was catapulted into international fame for playing the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, in Downton Abbey and will reprise this role in an upcoming film based on the television series.

A German Life runs at the Bridge Theatre from April 12-May 11, bridgetheatre.co.uk
