A further 449 people have died with coronavirus in the UK as death toll edges past 16,500

The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen to at least 16,509 after another 449 hospital patients died with Covid-19.

Monday's reported death tally comes after Sunday's daily figure fell to 596 – almost a third lower than the previous day and the lowest daily increase in victims for nearly two weeks. The UK figures cover hospital deaths up to 5pm on Sunday.

The majority of the new deaths – some 429 – were in England. Those patients were aged between 40 and 101 years old and 15 of the 429 patients had no known underlying health condition, Public Health England said.

In Wales nine further deaths were reported, bringing the total to 584, while 12 fatalities were reported in Scotland.

On Monday First Minister Mark Drakeford said there were signs coronavirus cases in hospital were stabilising and that new admissions were starting to decline.

He added that despite the good weather at the weekend police forces were reporting that the public were adhering to the lockdown restrictions “at a high level”.

In other parts of Europe the daily number of reported deaths continues to fall.

Italy reported 433 fatalities on Sunday – the lowest figure there in a week.

In Spain plans are being prepared to relax the lockdown rules to allow children to "get some fresh air". The new regulations will come into effect on April 27.

It comes as the country has reported more than 20,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In total coronavirus has infected 2.4m people around the world with the death toll standing at more than 165,000, PA reports.
