A full list of all of the road closures and roadworks across the North East this week

There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week.

Some roads are closed while others have lane closures. Temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place on roads in the region. Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary.

If you're planning travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, Durham, North Tyneside or South Tyneside, take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be affected.

Newcastle

  • Traffic taking turns in Heaton due to roadworks on Cleghorn Street in both directions near Rothbury Terrace. Until 5pm on February 20.
  • Traffic taking turns in Heaton due to roadworks on King John Terrace in both directions near Second Avenue. Until 5pm on February 20.
  • Strawberry Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks from Strawberry Place to St Andrews Street. Until February 23, 2023.
  • One lane closed due to gas main work on A167 Southbound from A167(M) to Hawks Road. Expect delays. Until February 23.
  • Rothbury Terrace in Heaton closed in both directions due to long-term roadworks from Heaton Road to A188 Chillingham Road. Until February 26, 2023.
  • Simonside Terrace in Heaton closed in both directions due to roadworks from Heaton Road to Lesbury Road. Until February 26.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A186 City Road at Tyne Street. Until 3rd March 2023.
  • Kingsway in Fenham closed in both directions due to roadworks between Fenham Hall Drive and Queensway. Until March 29, 2023.
  • One lane closed due to roadworks on A189 at A1056 Killingworth Way in North Gosforth. On the roundabout. Near to High Gosforth Park. Until April 7.
  • Saville Row closed due to roadworks from Northumberland Street to North Street. Until April 9, 2023.
  • Redheugh Bridge Road closed due to roadworks from Shot Factory Lane to A695 Railway Street. Until 12:47 on June 29, 2023.

Gateshead

  • Temporary traffic lights at Lamesley due to water main work on Greenford Lane at Haggs Lane. Until March 10.
  • Temporary traffic lights in Ryton due to roadworks on Cushy Cow Lane from Hexham Old Road to Mullen Drive. Until 5pm on July 3, 2023.
  • Temporary traffic lights at Ryton due to roadworks on Hexham Old Road between Grange Drive and B6317. Until 5pm on July 3, 2023.
  • Traffic taking turns in Crawcrook due to roadworks on Kepier Chare in both directions near Bracken Way. Until March 8.
  • Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50 mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 31, 2025.

Northumberland

  • Allendale Road in Hexham closed in both directions due to resurfacing work from B6531 (The Fox Pub) to Causey Hill Road. Until February 26.
  • Main Road in Wylam closed in both directions due to resurfacing work from Ovingham Road (Wylam) to Tyne Gardens (Ovingham). Until March 10.
  • A1171 Westmorland Way in Cramlington closed in both directions due to roadworks between Crow Hall Lane and A1172 Station Road. Until March 31.
  • Temporary traffic lights in Longframlington due to roadworks on A697 at B6344. Until 5pm on April 14, 2023.
  • Temporary traffic lights in Shieldfield due to gas main work on B1600 Stoddart Street between Shieldfield Lane and Union Street. Until December 28, 2023.

North Tyneside

  • Park Crescent in Shiremoor closed in both directions due to gas main work between Park Grove and Park Avenue. Until February 24.
  • Temporary traffic lights in North Shields due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street near Clive Street. Until May 13, 2024.
  • Tyne Street in North Shields closed in both directions due to roadworks from Union Street to Stephenson Street. Until May 15, 2023.
  • Temporary traffic lights in Longbenton due to roadworks on A188 Benton Lane at West Farm Avenue. Until June 23, 2023.

South Tyneside

  • Temporary traffic lights in South Shields due to roadworks on B1301 Dean Road at Hartington Terrace. Until 5pm on March 10.
  • Laygate in South Shields closed in both directions due to roadworks from B1301 Dean Road to Chichester Place. Until 5pm on February 24.
  • West Holborn in South Shields closed in both directions due to roadworks from Laygate Street to Weetman Street. Until 6pm on March 31, 2023.

Sunderland

  • Temporary traffic lights in Middle Rainton due to roadworks on Durham Road at Meadow Street. Until February 28, 2023.
  • No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Burdon Lane in both directions between Woodham Drive (Ryhope, Sunderland) and Burdon Turn-off (Burdon, Sunderland). Construction of the new Ryhope to Doxford Link road until August 11, 2023.
  • No through traffic allowed in Houghton-le-Spring due to roadworks on Redburn Row in both directions between Black Boy Road and B1284. Until September 21, 2023.

County Durham

  • Temporary traffic lights in Crook due to roadworks on A68 between A689 and Plantation Terrace. Until March 1.
  • Lindon Park in Meadowfield closed in both directions due to sewer works. Until March 3.
  • Temporary traffic lights in Murton due to gas main work on B1285 Station Road at Station Estate North. Until 5pm on March 16.
  • Wallnook Lane at Langley Park closed in both directions due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace. Until December 31, 2024.
