A full Hunter's Moon and a meteor shower can both be seen this week - here's when

It's going to be a great week for star gazers as two celestial events are to reach their peak.

On October 20 there will be a full Hunter's moon, so named as it came to signify the ideal time for hunting game, which were becoming fatter from eating falling grains, as people planned for the cold months ahead.

It is also known as the Travel Moon and the Dying Grass Moon.

And on October 21 the Orionid meteor shower reaches its peak. It originates from the well-known Halley's Comet and is made of the comet's debris.

It is characterised by fast meteors with fine trains and the shower gets its name from the constellation Orion where its journey originates.

The Orionids are known to be fast and bright and are considered to be among the most beautiful meteor showers of the year.

Unfortunately, however, this year's Orionid peak is happening so close to the month's full moon, so the bright moonlight will likely obscure the view.

That said, Orionid meteors are actually active from October 2 to November 7 each year, so sky watchers may still catch a glimpse of them at any time during October.

The key is to watch the skies from a dark location with a sky that's free of moonlight.

Meteor showers are caused when the Earth travels through a cloud of cometary debris.

Earlier this month people got a chance to see the Draconoid meteor shower, named after the constellation Draco - meaning the Dragon - just like your favourite Harry Potter baddy Draco Malfoy.
