A Fourth Wing TV series is coming to Prime Video — here’s everything you need to know

The news that romantasy fans have long been waiting for, the Fourth Wing TV series has finally been given the green light. After years of speculation, Amazon has confirmed the show will land on Prime Video.

A giant of the genre, Rebecca Yarros’s New York Times bestselling book series is set in the brutal world of a dragon-riding academy, where violence and warfare is interspersed with enemies-to-lovers romance and new-found friendships.

Drawing comparisons to Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, the Empyrean series has been a gateway to romantasy for many readers – myself included. Yarros’s immersive world-building is the perfect source material for a TV show, but details have been slim on the ground since the adaptation was first announced in 2023.

Now, just weeks after Yarros confirmed a fourth novel is on the way, we’ve finally had an updete. The project is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios with the author serving as executive producer. Oscar-winner Michael Jordan appeared on stage at the Amazon upfront presentation this week, announcing himself as the series executive producer before introducing fellow executive producer Lisa Joy (co-creator of the science-fiction drama Westworld). Meanwhile, Meredith Averill is onboard as screen writer and showrunner, alongside Yarros.

“Rebecca’s books have become one of the fastest-selling franchises of the 21st century, with a fandom so passionate, so devoted, they don’t just read these books, they live in them,” Averill said at the event. “The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humour and heart and a romance that will consume you.”

Last year, Yarros’s third book in the Empyrean series, Onyx Storm, became the fastest selling adult novel in two decades – it’s safe to say the TV show is going to be popular. Here’s everything you need to know about the Fourth Wing screen adaptation – including when and where you’ll be able to watch it.

When will the Fourth Wing TV show be released?

The Fourth Wing TV show is being developed by Amazon and will land on Prime Video. Announcing the project in front of TV advertisers at the Amazon upfront presentation, Jordan didn’t reveal much about the show. He said that his production studio, Outlier Society, have acquired the rights. The group behind the project include executive producers Jordan and Joy, showrunner Meredith Averill and producer Yarros.

The cast hasn’t been confirmed yet – but rumours are circulating that the Australian actor Josh Heuston could be in the running to play Xaden, the book’s main love interest.

Fans shouldn’t expect the series to land any time soon, as the filming is yet to begin.

What is the Fourth Wing TV show plot?

Amazon has confirmed the TV show is set for a five season run, so we can expect the first series to be based on the Fourth Wing novel. The first book follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who reluctantly enlists at Basgiath War College, following in the footsteps of her mother, a general in the military, rather than becoming a scribe like her father. Joining hundreds of candidates learning to become dragon riders, she faces deadly survival training and treacherous dragon bonding exercises, while navigating rivalries and romance at college, including with wingleader Xaden Riorson.

Violent suffers from a condition that makes her more fragile than other students, instead using her wits and intelligence to succeed. With slow-burn romance, magic and dragons, the TV show is set to blend high stakes action with enemies-to-lovers storylines.
