A flight from Edinburgh to London has landed in the Midlands after mid-air technical fault emergency

A flight from Edinburgh Airport to London City has declared a mid-air emergency over Birmingham and the Midlands.

The Flybe flight had departed the capital's airport this morning, Monday 22 July.

The plane was originally set to depart Edinburgh at 6.25am - with a scheduled arrival in London at around 8.20am.

But the flight instead took off at 6.51am, before declaring a general emergency in mid-air over the Midlands, according to flight trackers.

Why new drivers could be banned from driving at night

The aircraft is believed to be a De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q400.

Flight Radar 24 shows the flight circling around the Midlands after the emergency was called.

According to Birmingham Live , it is unclear where the plane landed in the Midlands but Birmingham Airport has been contacted for comment.

The flight is believed to have landed at around 7.51am in the Midlands - an hour into its journey.

Flight radars show the Flybe plane went from an altitude of around 8,000-feet to 0ft in around 30 minutes this morning (Monday, July 22).

Flybe said:

"Flybe can confirm that the captain of the above flight elected to divert to Birmingham this morning due to a suspected technical fault with the aircraft.

"Having taken all necessary action, the aircraft landed safely without further incident and taxi-ed to stand where all 56 passengers disembarked as normal.  As is standard procedure, the airport put its emergency vehicles on standby as a precautionary measure.

"The airline fully complied with its Duty of Care and passengers were offered the option of completing their journey by coach or being re-accommodated on a flight returning to Edinburgh.

"The safety of its passengers and crew remains the airline’s number one priority and Flybe apologises for the inconvenience experienced."
