Andrew Upton escalates the chaos in George Feydeau’s French farce with his adaptation of the seminal work A Flea in Her Ear. Feydeau was a promiscuous figurehead of the hedonistic counterculture in Paris at the turn of the century, and the play has remained a staple of theatre companies globally for over a decade.
When Raymonde suspects her husband of infidelity, she lays the perfect trap. She plans to catch him with his pants down in a seedy hotel. But too soon, it all falls apart. The scheme goes awry in a case of mistaken identity, misplaced honour and mischievous doubling.
Directed by Simon Phillips, the Sydney Theatre Company’s take on the play moves with clockwork comedic timing. The stage show is tied together with detail, wit and some farcical pleasure, with designs by Gabriela Tylesova.
