A five-and-a-half mile stretch of motorway is to shut at night for more than two months

A five-and-a-half mile stretch of motorway will be closed overnight for more than two months due to roadworks.

Repairs on the M66, between junction 2 for Bury and the A56, will start next week.

The 12-week project includes replacing a barrier on the motorway's central reservation, as well as resurfacing work and drainage repairs.

All of the work will take place overnight, resulting in closures between 9pm and 5am.

Only one side of the motorway will be closed on each night and diversions will be in place.

Highways England say the project is expected to take until February 28, 2020.

However, the roadworks will be lifted on December 19 to ensure drivers travelling during the festive period are not affected.

They will resume again on January 6.

Highways England have written to residents living close to the motorway to inform them of the impending work and closures.

The letter reads: "The work is essential to ensure we keep the network safe and operational for our customers.

"For safety purposes, full closures are required on the M66 between junction 2 and the A56 during the dates and times stated above.

"This will be carried out in various phases and only one side of the carriageway will be closed at a time. Associated slip road closures will also be required, and localised signed diversion routes will be in place.

"Please note that whilst we always aim to work to the programme, unforeseen circumstances may mean slight changes occur at short notice.

"Every effort will be made to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. However, these works will inevitably generate some noise and disruption and we'd like to apologise in advance for any disturbance."
