A first Obama-Palin encounter

In what could be the first taste of a 2012 Obama-Palin match-up, the president and Alaska governor are to share a stage at a fancy-dress dinner this Saturday.

They will attend the Alfalfa Dinner, a gathering of Washington's political elite from which the press are banned.

Palin, who ran for Vice-president alongside Republican Arizona Senator John McCain, did not join Republican other Republican governors at Obama's inauguration. Without actually accomplishing anything or saying anything of substance, she has managed to win news coverage, for example complaining the day after the inauguration about news media coverage of her children, even though, at that point, the news media had something bigger to cover -- the nation's first black president.
