A first look inside Mother Mercy, the new Newcastle cocktail bar underneath the Old George

If you're looking to escape the Bigg Market's hustle and bustle, you could creep down into Newcastle's newest cocktail bar.

Mother Mercy opens its doors today, but you won't easily spot it among the Bigg Market strip. That's because the 110-capacity cocktail and wine bar is hidden underground.

To find it, you'll have to go in Old George Yard, through the alleyway between the Beehive and Pumphreys. Then, a blue door will lead you into a former cellar bar transformed into a contemporary cocktail hideway.

Once inside, you're a world away from the raucousness just yards away on Newcastle 's Bigg Market. Mother Mercy is designed for those who want to 'seek refuge' from the busy and boisterous Bigg Market, those who prefer a more sophisticated sip.

We took a look around the new cocktail bar Mother Mercy which opens in the Old George Yard, Newcastle upon Tyne (Newcastle Chronicle)

The team includes Luke Riley, former bar manager at House of Tides, and Emily Millington, who previously worked as group manager at Alvinos, Poison Cabinet, Intermezzo, Tokyo and Rayz.

Customers are offered table service every night of the weekend, in Mother Mercy's cosy 'hideout bar', which has space for 30 guests.

Cocktails include a full Spritz service, a vegan gingerbread snowball made from homemade advocaat and the Mother Mercy's bottled mojito, which are carbonated in-house and flavoured with champagne and strawberries.

Mother Mercy opens at 5pm on Friday November 29.  It will be open from 5pm - midnight, Tuesday to Thursday and 5pm - 1am Friday and Saturday.
