A first look at the Warren De La Salle (Mich.) $2 million stadium project

Warren De La Salle is getting a new $2 million athletic facility.

And instead of grass, the new stadium will be surfaced with field turf.

Last week, the De La Salle Collegiate Board of Trustees approved the $2 million athletic field project that will include a fenced-in multi-use athletic field with field turf, scoreboard, grandstands that will seat 1,500 fans, and a press box to accommodate coaches and media.

An anonymous donor has contributed $300,000 for the rights to name the athletic field, St. John Baptist de La Salle Field, which will be used for junior varsity and freshman football, soccer, lacrosse and other community programs.

According to an article released by the school, all levels of soccer and lacrosse will use the new field for practices and games. Freshman and junior varsity football will also use the field for home contests. However, the varsity football team, will continue to play home games at Wayne State University’s Tom Adams Field, which holds 6,000.

“This outdoor athletic field renovation represents years of planning, fundraising and work by staff, coaches, administrators, trustees, donors and alumni,” De La Salle athletic director Mike Watson said in an article published on the school’s website.

The addition of a new artificial infill turf field will not only improve the aesthetic of our athletic facility, but create a playing surface that is consistent and safe.”

No official opening date has been announced, but construction is set to start as early as mid-May for teams to begin using it on Sept. 1.
