'A first-class chap who always had a good story' - Subs Bench pays tribute to legendary Bristol City reporter Peter Godsiff

For 25 years his name became synonymous not only with Bristol City but those crucial journalistic qualities of fairness and accuracy.

Peter Godsiff, who passed away in August at the age of 81, had a front row seat during the Robins success through the mid to late 1970s in his role as Bristol City reporter on the Bristol Evening Post.

He was well-liked but most of all hugely respected by his peers and the players, managers and staff who came through the doors of Ashton Gate during his three decades of coverage.

Many of those personalities gathered for his funeral at St Andrew's Church in Chew Magna to pay tribute, including former Evening Post colleague Richard Latham who took over covering City from Peter in 1982 when he became Sports Editor.

In a special edition of Subs Bench, Richard speaks to former City chairman Leslie Kew plus Robins legends Gerry Sweeney and Tom Ritchie to remember the impact Peter had on the club and to remember and celebrate his legacy.

"He was a great professional but over the years he and I had so much fun together," said Kew.

"When we look back at Peter, the quality of what he produced for the Bristol Evening Post was outstanding.

"He was hugely respected by all the manager throughout the years. They knew they had that trust with him and he loved the club and knew what he was doing in how he put the stories over.

"Peter always had a good story."

Among his many achievements Peter also wrote a book, 'Bristol City - The Complete History of the Club', in 1982. He also edited the Bristol City and Bristol Rovers matchday programmes for many years.

Peter is survived by his wife, Margaret, and three children, Nick, Ian and Anna.
