A filmmaker from ‘The Last Dance’ has been stockpiling video of LeBron James

Three years ago, ESPN released a multi-part documentary on the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls titled “The Last Dance” and drew rave reviews from critics and fans alike.

LeBron James has been compared to Jordan incessantly over the years, not so much in terms of style of play but in legacy. Most have considered Jordan the greatest player in NBA history, but his hold on that honor has loosened. An increasing number of people believe James is either the greatest or on the verge of becoming just that.

Los Angeles Lakers radio play-by-play announcer John Ireland said on the “Awful Running Podcast” that one of the main producers from “The Last Dance” has been filming James this season and is stockpiling content.

Via Lakers Nation:

“I hope I’m not talking out of school here, Andy Thompson, the guy who shot “The Last Dance,” Mychal Thompson’s younger brother, who has worked for the NBA for 30 years, has spent a ton of time with us this year. So if LeBron ever wanted to go down this road, I think Andy is stockpiling that just so he has it and has the opportunity to tell the story,” Ireland said on the “Awful Announcing Podcast.”

“If we go on a magical run to the title, Andy, who was the driving force behind “The Last Dance,” most of the stuff you saw in those 10 episodes was shot by Andy Thompson. And Andy’s a smart guy, he’s already working on, potentially, a story about the end of LeBron’s run like he had one for the end of Jordan’s run.”

Over the last three months, the Lakers have transformed themselves from a potential lottery team to one that is in the Western Conference finals. There is a possibility James will earn his fifth championship ring in a few weeks. If he does so, it could be worthy of a documentary series.
