It’s often seen as a taboo subject, but a new survey has shed light on people’s masturbation practices.
The survey, by Frac.tl, asked people about their sexual experiences - both alone and with a partner.
Frac.tl said: “With many of us having sex about 80 times per year, a bit of bashfulness is inevitable. But what does it take for the average person to feel awkward, embarrassed, or downright ashamed during their most intimate physical encounters?
“To find out, we asked 1,012 people to describe their most memorable embarrassing sexual experiences and secrets.”
The results revealed that almost a fifth (19%) of men have injured themselves while masturbating, while 9% of women have done so.
Meanwhile, it seems that females are more injury-prone during sex, with 30% reporting injuries during intercourse, compared to 26% of men.
Some of the sex injuries during masturbation were fairly minor, including burst eye blood vessels and scratches on the skin.
But other were more severe, including one 20-year-old woman, who suffered a brain aneurysm while masturbating.
While a significant proportion of respondents admitted to these injuries, it seems that many were reluctant to seek medical help.
Ten percent of women and 5% of men who hurt themselves during sex or masturbation admitted that they should have visited a hospital, but didn’t because they were too embarrassed.
The results also suggest that most people keep quiet about minor injuries during sex, due to a fear of ruining the moment.
Twenty-eight percent of respondents said they’d been injured during sex, but only 17% said they’ve ever been aware of their partner becoming injured.
