A fervent prayer

The Aizu Jibo Daikannon statue in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, wears a mask as a prayer for the novel coronavirus to be brought under control. Measuring 4.1 meters by 5.3 meters, and weighing about 30 kilograms, the mask was placed on the 57-meter-tall statue on Wednesday. It is vermillion, a color believed to ward off evil. A Buddhist memorial service was also held on the day.
