A feast for the pies as Perthshire bakeries win big

Three popular Perthshire bakeries have won top awards at the World Scotch Pie Championships.

Murrays Bakers and D&G Lindsay and Son from Perth and Sugar and Spice in Auchterarder all won big at the awards.

Over 75 professional bakers entered around 460 of their best products into 11 categories at this year’s awards.

Murrays Bakers on Perth’s South Street won bronze awards for its apple pies and its cheese, ham and onion quiche, and a silver award for its macaroni pies.

Owner Linda Hill said: “We are delighted with our win and can go away with our heads held very high indeed.

“To have been judged as one of the best against so many of our peers is a huge achievement.”

D&G Lindsay from Perth’s North Methven Street won a bronze award for its macaroni pies, and a gold award for its steak and gravy Scone Thistle pie.

And Sugar and Spice won a bronze award for its sausage rolls, and silver awards for its steak bridies and Scotch pies.

Owners Allan and Claire Devlin said they were over the moon to receive an award for every single product they entered.

The awards were once again handed out by television presenter Carol Smillie.

She said: “The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards really is one of the highlights of my year.

“I have been hosting since 2016 and I have seen many well deserved winners in all the categories take to the stage so I know what it means to win.

“Every winner here today should be proud of their success and I hope they all see their businesses grow and prosper in years to come.”

Meanwhile head judge Ian Nelson said: “For 21 years now, professional pie makers throughout Scotland, and from even further afield, have been so proud of their produce that they have taken the time and trouble to enter the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards, and I must say that the standard keeps getting better each year. All of our winners deserve the accolades they have taken home today.”

And Alasdair Smith, chief executive of Scottish Bakers, said: “I am incredibly proud to be a part of this competition recognising excellence and celebrating success.

“Everyone is a winner.”
