Bolton stabbing: Tributes flood in following the murder of a seven-year-girl stabbed to death while walking in the park with her family on Mother's Day

Tributes are flooding in for a seven-girl-old stabbed to death while walking with her family in a park on Mother's Day.

The girl was killed in what police described as a 'totally unprovoked and random attack' in Queen's Park in Bolton on Sunday afternoon.

A 30-year-old woman, who was detained at the scene by a member of the public, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police say she has no connection to the little girl's family.

Earlier today Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson led the tributes to the victim.

He said: "Words cannot describe how awful this attack is.

"This is a family’s worst nightmare. The incident is horrendous and I cannot begin to imagine what the family of this little girl are going through.

"We are determined to quickly understand how this came to happen, leaving a young family so distraught and so devastated in an instant."

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins tweeted: "This is absolutely shocking.

"My thoughts are with the parents and family of the little girl.

"It is unthinkable what they must be going through.

"We will ensure they are getting professional support."

Writing on the Manchester Evening News Facebook page Janey Suzey said: "As if the world isn't a terrifying place as it is at the moment, something like this happens.

"A family destroyed trying to salvage a bit of normality having some fresh air on Mother's Day.

"It breaks my heart. RIP little girl."

Erika Weber said: "Heartbreaking.

"RIP Little one. No mother deserves this on such a special day like today. Thoughts to her family. Such a sad world we live in."

Stacey Williams posted: "I have no words for this, it's shocking.

"I'm looking at my 8 year old now and thinking HOW could another human do that.

"So sad for that little girl and her family and friends."

Holly Lythgoe said: "Same age as my son. I had to hug him tighter after reading this - my heart goes out to her mother and family.

"Absolutely senseless."

Danielle McGarry wrote: "My God my heart is breaking.

"Poor angel.

"My thoughts are with her family just when I thought nothing more could shock me.

"So innocent so pure. RIP baby girl."
