A&E nurse 'lucky to be alive' after car crash on way home from night shift

An A&E nurse said she is "lucky to be alive" after she was in a car crash as she drove home from a night shift.

Laylaa Nicholas, from Litherland, had just finished her shift at Aintree Hospital when she was involved in a dramatic crash, on October 26.

The 26-year-old who was travelling to her boyfriend's home claims she had only been driving for about "30 seconds" when her car was struck on Admiral Street, in Toxteth.

The nurse said the impact of the crash caused her car to spin three times and career into a central bollard, before she managed to emergency stop.

Laylaa told the ECHO: "I dropped my dog off at my sisters on Saturday and I was only in my car for about 30 seconds when it happened, I was driving to my boyfriend's house .

"I turned into Admiral Street and and all I saw is lights to the left of me.

"They went into the side of my car and and I spun three times, before I hit a central bollard and then spun again, before I managed to do an emergency stop.

"I was a trauma call to Aintree and I work in at the hospital doing nursing so it was a bit embarrassing because I was in my uniform and back there."

Merseyside Police confirmed the driver of the other vehicle was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and has since been released under investigation.

Laylaa added: "They [the driver and passenger] didn't even come over to see me, to see if I was okay as I was lying on the floor."

The bank nurse said following the crash she has lost out on money and even an upcoming job opportunity.

She added: "I am losing out on money as I am on the bank. I won't be able to to take any more time off.

"They had no regard for my safety or how I was.

"I was meant to start a new a new job and work for the ambulance service and probably won't be able to start till next year.

"They haven't just ruined my car, they have ruined my job opportunity too."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We were called to a slight injury RTC on Admiral St at 9.25pm on Saturday between a Volvo and a Hyundai.

"The driver of the Hyundai, a 27 year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and has been released under investigation.

"The driver of the Volvo suffered pain to her neck and back."
