A&E at Wythenshawe Hospital reopens for child emergency admissions by ambulance

A&E at Wythenshawe Hospital has opened up to child emergency admissions.

Ambulances with paediatric emergencies were temporarily diverted to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital from early April so capacity at Wythenshawe could meet demand during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The accident and emergency department began to accept paediatric emergencies via ambulance from Wednesday morning.

Trust bosses announced a phased reopening of Wythenshawe's paediatric services.

Children at the Starlight Unit at Wythenshawe - a paediatric inpatient ward - were also transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

A spokesperson for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust said: "The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) which manages The Starlight Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital will begin a phased re-opening of its paediatric services following the temporary relocation of the Unit to RMCH in April, as part of the Trust’s response to COVID-19.

"The Starlight Unit will commence a three staged re-opening of its inpatient and outpatient services, from Tuesday and paediatric emergencies from Wednesday.

"New processes have been implemented to support social distancing and patient streaming to ensure the safety of our patients, their families and staff.

"Further details are available on the MFT website."

Adult A&E admissions were not affected by the changes., which bosses said was a 'necessary step to ensure the Wythenshawe Hospital capacity continues to meet additional demands for adult Covid-19 patients'.
