'A drunk woman picked up my son and THREW HIM as he played in Piccadilly Gardens'

A furious mum says her six-year-old son was picked up and THROWN by a drunk woman as he played in Piccadilly Gardens.

Jen Egan’s little boy Xander was playing in the fountains when, she says, an ‘intoxicated’ woman wandered over and told him off before lifting him off the ground.

Frightened, Xander kicked at the woman, who then threw him down onto the ground.

The schoolboy suffered large scratches on his chest and side was later taken to A&E by his mum and dad.

Jen had left Xander with her friend as she nipped into a nearby shop on the afternoon of July 26.

When she returned, she found him in tears wrapped up in a blanket.

She says a ‘drunk’ woman had been in the fountains with children and 'began to pick on one of the children'.

“My son told her to leave the boy alone and that’s when she picked my son up," Jen told the Manchester Evening News.

"He told her 'no' and kicked, so she threw him away from her.”

Jen says her son was badly scratched during the incident.

She said her friend confronted the woman, who apologised, but was ‘very drunk’.

Jen immediately called the police before managing to find two officers who were on patrol in the city centre.

She said they took details of the incident but were unable to find the woman.

Jen said Xander is still upset about the incident and has asked if the woman has been caught.

She has complained to police about their handling of the case, having phoned four times since the incident to check on officers' progress.

She told the M.E.N: “The police officer said she was probably a bit drunk so it was probably innocent.

"It doesn’t matter if she was drunk, she assaulted a child and he’s only six years old.

“If I had done that to him, I would be arrested.

“The police said if they saw her they would talk to her. But they said the likelihood of finding the woman was slim.”

A spokesman for GMP said: "A police officer who was already in Piccadilly Gardens spoke with the child’s mother.

"A search was then carried out of the area, but the unknown female, who had apparently been playing with the child, was not located.

"A crime has been submitted for further investigation and the family can be reassured that their concerns are being taken seriously."
