A drive through coronavirus testing centre has been set up in Wigan

A drive through testing service has been opened up for people in Wigan suspected of having coronavirus.

People showing symptoms of the virus can now be screened without even leaving their car.

However, the facility at Leigh Infirmary is appointment-only.

Hospital bosses say people must first call NHS 111 and undergo a telephone assessment.

Any patients suspected of having coronavirus will then be referred to the centre.

They will not enter the building, but will instead be swabbed outside by specially trained nurses.

In a statement, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust said: "The NHS in Wigan has established a new drive through service on the premises for testing people who may have coronavirus.

"People will only drive to the testing facility if they have been given an appointment, following a telephone assessment by NHS 111. It is NOT a drop-in centre and ONLY those who meet the nationally agreed criteria for a suspected case will be asked to attend and given an appointment for their test.

"Only referred cases will be tested. If you attend any of our hospital premises without an appointment as YOU WILL NOT be tested.

"Those referred to the centre for swabbing will arrive in their own car, and will not enter the building. They will be swabbed outside by specially trained nurses.

"This service is being provided by nursing staff from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. We are doing this to minimise the impact of testing on local hospitals, which is where cases have been tested in recent weeks.

"If you have any concerns about your own health in relation to coronavirus, please follow the national guidance provided by NHSE."

A similar service was set up in Bolton earlier in the week.

However, the location of the drive-through testing facility has not been released by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.

Three people in Wigan have tested positive for coronavirus, two of which are parents from Garrett Hall Primary School in Tyldesley.

The school was the first in the region to shut last week and reopened on Monday following 'a specialist deep clean'.
