A dog poo bag tree has appeared alongside a popular Carmarthenshire footpath

A tree with dog poo bags dangling from its branches has appeared in Burry Port .

The 'dog poo blossom tree', which is in the woodlands where many people walk their dogs, is thought to have appeared in protest at dog fouling in the area.

A number of bags were spotted hanging from the branches of the tree with a framed sign underneath reading: "Dog poo blossom tree. Aesthetically pleasing with a distinctive potent aroma.

"Generally found alongside footpaths in areas of natural beauty."

Logos for both Carmarthenshire Council and the Wales Coast Path feature on the sign, but it is not known who is behind it.

A sign has also been placed on a nearby signpost with a picture of a person dodging a flying dog poo bag, with the warning: "Beware poo bag tossers" written underneath.

The woodland area is a popular spot for walking where many residents take their dogs and is also one of a number of unrestricted and currently free locations where the council is proposing to introduce parking charges.

Councillor Philip Hughes, executive board member for enforcement, said: "It’s clear that local people have had enough of irresponsible dog owners who not only refuse to clear up after their dogs, but have total disregard for communities and fellow residents.

"We sympathise completely with the person who has gone out of their way to raise awareness of this disgusting issue.

"Just recently we have had targeted patrols in the Burry Port and Pembrey area, and have issued fixed penalty notices to a number of irresponsible people.

"We have also been raising awareness through the press and our social media channels.

"Bagged dog waste can be placed in any bin or taken home and disposed of with household waste, just bagging it, then leaving it on the ground or hanging from branches is littering.

"There really is no excuse – if you have a dog, you know that you are responsible for cleaning up after it."
