A deep rectangular hole has suddenly opened up in a Swansea road

A deep, rectangular shaped hole has appeared on a Swansea road, after another, smaller hole there, was repaired by a council team.

The first hole appeared in Heol Dalycopa in Llansamlet , where water had eroded the road surface, prompting a visit by highways department officers.

They carried out a repair, leaving a neat, rectangular shape.

But the new piece of square road surface has since fallen away, partly due to recent, heavy rainfall, but also because water beneath the road surface has washed away materials deeper in the road.

Temporary traffic lights have now been installed on the road as further investigations are carried out.

A Swansea Council spokesman said: “Our highways maintenance teams previously visited the site to carry out a small repair to the road.

“This has since developed into a larger hole as a result of water beneath the surface of the road.

“We have installed temporary traffic lights at the junction to help traffic move safely around the defective road surface and have installed a plate over the hole.

“These will be in place while we carry our further investigations”.

Highways officers have been assisted in their work by police.

A South Wales Police spokesman added: “We were made aware at about 4.05pm about a hole in the road in Heol Dalycopa.

“PCSOs assisted highways staff with the traffic flow”.
