Day after birth, 'Border', born to Pakistani mother, dies of lung infection in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: Baby boy "Border", born to a Pakistani mother in Punjab's Amritsar, died of severe infection a day after he was born.

Gynecologist at Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs Memorial Civil Hospital Dr Arif Mansuri said that the boy who was born to Pakistani woman Dehlai Bai on Monday afternoon died on late Monday night in the hospital due to a lung infection.

Kailash, husband of Dehla Bai said that he along with 14 other members of his family, had arrived in India from Pakistan to meet their relatives in Jodhpur.

He said that after crossing the International border, his wife suddenly started having pains, so she was rushed to the hospital where she gave birth to a male boy whom they christened as "Border". "He was born after crossing the Indo-Pak International border so we decided to name him Border," he said.

He said everybody here helped them, yet their son didn't survive. "It was our destiny and we accept it as the will of God," he said.

Arif said that Dehla Bai was admitted to the hospital at around 2.30pm on Monday with labour pains. She neither had any medical test reports nor any other document of her medical history and was going to deliver her third child.

The child had passed the meconium (first faces) in the uterus which entered the his lungs leading to a severe infection resulting in his death.

However, he said the mother was stable and would be discharged on Wednesday.

Kailash informed that they performed the last rites of their child according to Hindu traditions.

Baburam, a relative of Kailash who had arrived from Jodhpur to receive his relatives said they would all be traveling to Jodhpur after Dehla Bhai was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.

He said he didn’t want his relatives to return to Pakistan but to stay with them forever in India.
