A man who travelled from the United States to see his dying father has finally made it to his bedside in the Gold Coast University Hospital.

The Queensland government granted Mark Kilian and his wife Anneli Gericke an exemption to travel from New South Wales to the Gold Coast.

They were allowed to leave Sydney after having spent more than a week in hotel quarantine.

Mr Kilian's father, Frans, has pancreatic cancer.

They had been worried he would die before they made it out of quarantine to see him.

They landed at Gold Coast Airport on Thursday afternoon and made it inside the hospital on Friday afternoon.

Mr Kilian said after the visit "it was great" to have the chance to hold his father's hand.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young had said on Thursday the visit had to be "managed very carefully".

Mr Kilian said at the time that while he had hoped to see his father earlier, he was grateful to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Dr Young "for enabling this to happen".
