'A danger throughout': Bristol Rovers players who impressed in Cardiff City friendly

Bristol Rovers lost narrowly to Cardiff City on Friday night, putting in a good performance against the Championship play-off hopefuls.

Despite the 2-1 loss, the Gas would have been happy with their outing and Ben Garner managed to see two different XIs play in four quarters of 35 minutes.

There were several names who stood out above the rest in each of their own 70 minutes of football and gave Garner a selection headache for the first game back against Ipswich on September 5.

We've rounded up five of the players who impressed against the Bluebirds.

Jack Baldwin

The defender started the game in the middle of the back three, perhaps a surprise given Max Ehmer's inclusion, but looked incredibly solid at the back.

Cardiff started the game with big man Kieffer Moore up top and Baldwin nullified him for much of the first quarter, winning the headers and keeping tight.

At one point in the first 35 Cardiff boss Neil Harris screamed at Moore to 'get him off your toes', obviously unhappy at the hold Baldwin had over the striker.

His passing was solid, picking out some good long and short balls and his performance may go some way to giving Garner a selection headache come the first game of the season against Ipswich Town next Saturday.

Luke Leahy

Deployed in perhaps his favoured LWB role, Leahy was a constant threat down the wing for the Gas.

He was always available as an option and was often heard screaming for the ball when out in space. When he did get the ball at his feet, he combined well with Sam Nicholson down the left and the pair looked dangerous throughout.

At the one point in the first 35, he collected a long ball from Baldwin with a perfectly timed first time volleyed pass to set Nicholson on his way. Quiter in the second quarter, but an impressive outing from the defender.

Jayden Mitchell-Lawson

While he perhaps wasn't the goalscoring threat the Gas needed, JML was a constant nuisance in Cardiff's side.

As we saw for much of the second half of last season, the winger is very difficult to win the ball off and he won foul after foul for Rovers in the first half.

He should have been awarded a penalty after being brought down in the box, and went on one impressive mazy run from deep to find Nicholson who set up Little for shot.

He's not really suited to be a loan striker but did well when called upon on Friday evening.

Josh Hare

Has this man ever misplaced a cross? His delivery from out wide is so impressive, and he threatened constantly down that right hand side.

He often had acres of space and used it well to get balls into the box or bomb forward and was a danger throughout the second half.

He intercepted balls and tackled well and is looking like the man to make the right wing-back spot his own this season after a string of good games this pre-season. The Gas certainly missed him last season.

Zain Walker

Like Jayden Mitchell-Lawson, Walker is a real nuisance when he gets the ball at his feet. His close control is very good and he makes it hard to tackle him without fouling.

A good run to create space, helped by the misleading overlap of David Tutonda, and a good pass set up Lucas Tomlinson's goal and he could be in with a good chance of first team minutes this season.

He knows how to beat and man, twisting and turning and often leaving players in his dust. He still has work to do, and sometimes gave the ball away needlessly, but Garner would have been pleased with his outing.
