A dad glassed another man after a dancefloor tussle, leaving him blind in one eye

A dad left another man blind in one eye after glassing him in a dancefloor argument in a West Didsbury bar.

Nathan Stevens, 29, lashed out with 'excessive self defence' when challenging a punter at Hula Bar last year, a court heard.

Stevens had 'taken exception' to something the victim Daniel Roberts had said to one of his female friends on the dancefloor of the Burton Road venue in April 2018 and 'words were exchanged' between the pair, the judge was told.

Mr Roberts initially pushed him, with Stevens also arguing in court he was grabbed by the throat.

But the defendant then responded by swinging a punch with a beer glass in his hand which shattered in the face of 28-year-old Mr Roberts.

He was rushed to hospital and underwent seven hours of surgery in a bid to save the sight in his left eye, but it was unsuccessful.

He was also left with a number of deep cuts on his face which took a long time to heal and have left him scarred.

Electrician Mr Roberts spent three months off work and now struggles having lost half his vision, Maria Brannan prosecuting, said.

Disabled man had own walking stick forced into his mouth to stop him screaming while he was robbed

In a statement read to the court, the victim said his eyeball was saved thanks to a silicon implant which helps it retain its shape, but he had to put steroid drips into it every single day.

Mr Roberts said: "I am normally a very positive person but I have down days when I wished this had never happened and that I still had the sight in my eye."

Immediately after the attack, the victim was pushed against the wall and Stevens, who didn't realise how bad the injury was, left the bar.

However he handed himself in to police several weeks later after an appeal in the Manchester Evening News.

Stevens, of Doris Road, Edgeley, Stockport, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding at an earlier hearing.

In a basis of plea he stated that the blow was a case of 'excessive self defence' after he was pushed or grabbed by the victim.

The A Team gang which dominated Salford was broken and humiliated - the Christian Hickey shooting trial showed how

The dad had been left 'devastated' at the injury he had caused and 'that was never his intention', Daniel Travers, defending, said.

"He knows how significant an effect that will have for the rest of (his victim's) life," he said.

"We are talking about a few moments of madness" he added.

"This is a very poor reaction and was a very bad decision made whilst in drink.

"It is an immediate and instinctive reaction and we are talking about a few seconds. He has not picked up the glass to use as a weapon, it was already in his dominant hand and that's what has caused this injury."

He urged Judge Timothy Clayson to suspend any prison term as court was told Stevens was 'committed' to his family, including his children.

However those appeals were ignored and he was jailed for two years and four months at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday afternoon.

Passing sentence, Judge Clayson said: "This is a really tragic situation which has resulted in the loss of sight in one eye, an injury that is lifelong and grave.

"This was not pre-meditated, it was a single blow which was issued in response to a push or you being grabbed for a few seconds by the throat.

"However you were affected by alcohol and it's right that you would have likely not have reacted by swinging a punch at your victim if you had been sober.

"And in the end, those who cause serious injury in violent offences whilst in drink have only themselves to blame and will be held responsible for their actions."
