A D-Day veteran asked for help to tidy up his garden - but an army of volunteers did much more

D-Day veteran Harold Burgess needed a bit of help to tidy up his overgrown garden.

The 102-year-old was hoping to get a few paving stones laid and weeds cut back so he could carry on hanging out his washing at his home in Cutgate, Rochdale.

So he asked his local British Legion Branch if they could help.

They spoke to Re-Org, a support programme armed forces veterans, run by the charity Groundwork Greater Manchester.

But when Terry Morley, from Re-Org, took a look at Harold's garden he knew a few new paving stones wasn't going to do the job.

He mobilised an army of local volunteers and tradesmen who set about transforming the garden.

They landscaped the entire garden, laying new flags and a path, and provided a bench so Harold, who served in North Africa,  Sicily and Italy, returned to the UK for the D-day landings, then fought his way through Germany with the 7th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery, could sit out and enjoy it.

Harold said: "I want to thank everybody - it’s lovely.

"It is most impressive and there’s no question about that."

Terry said: "I had the utmost pleasure to chat with Harold. He is one of the nicest, bravest and most humblest men I have ever met and he asked me to thank everyone for their contributions, work completed and messages he received.

"He's 102 and still going strong, a true veteran and gentlemen we are all very proud of."

The work was carried out with the help of Paul Ellison, chairman of Norden Environment and Economic Village Association, staff from Norden Co-Op, RS Landscapes, Steven Dougie from Jet Cleaning Services, Rochdale In Bloom and others.
