Having just read a hard-of-hearing subtitle on BBC Four television that accompanied the famous Christmas carol with the words “Away in a Manager”, I was reminded of my brother’s experience as rector of Liverpool many years ago.
He had typed out his annual carol sheet, for use in local schools, and put it through the computer’s spellcheck.
It was only when he distributed the sheet, at the first school he visited, that he noticed carol number one was now entitled “Away in a Manager”.
The spellcheck had evidently not recognised “manger”. Alan Bennett, or maybe Rowan Atkinson, could preach a classic sermon on that particular computer error.
