This book made me eager to read more of Sarah J. Maas’ work because it was a masterpiece.
This novel is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which is why I was so interested in it in the first place because I love reading different, modern versions of classics. This one definitely didn’t fail to impress either.
A Court of Thorns and Roses follows the story of Feyre (who is a huntress) and how her life changes when she is impisoned in the kingdom of her enemy, much to her shock and despair. Thus begins the love/hate type relationship between the two main characters, Feyre and Tamlin.
Firstly I would like to talk about the characters. Tamlin, through his mysterious identity and rash features, reminded me of the ‘Opera Ghost’ from The Phantom of the Opera, which I really loved, and thus made me really like Tamlin’s character. And also, Feyre is a capable and independant individual, yet not as extreme as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, which is another thing I really loved about this book. The fact that Feyre is also timid and innocent but not a complete damsel in distress. She sort of represents what a normal teen girl is like.
I would also like to talk about the romance part of this book which I found was rather… innapropriate and too forward to be a young adult read. However I would recommend this to older readers. I also didn’t really like the modern cliche of a girl falling in love with the enemy and the enemy being all mysterious and everything. I do not want to compare this to Twilight, but the relationship in this book kind of made me think about Bella and Edward. But maybe that’s just my weird way of thinking.
Other than that, the plot was fantastic and very well thought out. It was sweet, shocking and, at times, really eerie and compelling.
Sarah J. Maas’ writing is amazing and this book made me want to start reading her Throne of Glass series (right after I finish my current mile-long TBR pile) *laughs awkwardly at an imaginary audience*
All in all, just go and read this book if you’re a older teenager and just need something new to read. This book won’t let you down.
