A couple shared the news of their engagement on social media - but ended up likely regretting it after their photo was flooded with mean comments from trolls about the size of the ring.
New York food bloggers Jen Phanomrat and Leo Samanamud, the couple behind the popular YouTube channel Just Eat Life, recently got engaged after nine years together.
But when Phanomrat announced the news to her 63,000 Instagram followers, with a post that read: “Nine years later, I said YES to my best friend!” the response she received was unexpected and hurtful.
Rather than congratulating the couple on the milestone, many people were too focused on the engagement ring - and they didn’t hold back in their criticisms.
“Very happy, except that’s the smallest ring I’ve ever seen,” one person wrote while another asked: “Are you getting the diamond at the wedding?”
The joyful occasion was ruined even further with comments such as: “It must suck to wait nine years for a ring that looks like that.”
In addition to rudely ridiculing the simple style of Phanomrat’s engagement ring, which is made of a simple gold band and a small pearl, others mocked the fit of the ring.
“My best friend would at least know my ring size, especially after nine years,” someone wrote.
Despite the negativity, Phanomrat is ecstatic with the ring - which she told Yahoo Lifestyle she would have chosen herself.
Defending her husband-to-be’s choice, Phanomrat said: “He knew exactly what type of ring I’d love. A delicate, hammered gold ring with a tiny pearl. I don’t usually wear any jewellery, but when I do, it’s simple and minimal.”
The ring is also practical - as a cooking show host, Phanomrat pointed out that her hands are usually covered in food so a larger ring would have been a hindrance.
However, after the wave of hateful comments, the blogger, who boasts more than 81,000 YouTube subscribers, said she was “shocked” to see that a majority of the judgements were coming from women.
And although she didn’t want to let trolls ruin her special day, Phanomrat decided to disable comments on her Instagram picture after cruel memes of the ring started to circulate.
On Samanamud's post, people are now responding with messages of support alongside typical congratulatory wishes.
"Congratulations! The ring is special and perfect for you both... That's what matters," one person wrote.
