A conveniently placed drain saved Rory McIlroy from an awful shot into the water

Golf is never an easy sport. It’s a sport where even the good shots find ways to backfire.

But the reverse happened to Rory McIlroy during Sunday’s final round of the Tour Championship. McIlroy, the tournament leader at the time, hit his second shot on the par-4 eighth well beyond the green to the left. The ball was heading straight for the water, which given the huge money at stake in the FedEx Cup, it would have been costly.

That was until a rogue drain conveniently intervened and potentially saved McIlroy millions of dollars. Shots don’t get much luckier than this one.

Seriously, what a break.

Golf fans couldn’t believe how fortunate McIlroy was there. He would save par on the hole thanks to that drain.

If Rory holds on to win, he’ll really need to take that drain cover back home for his trophy case. It would be that valuable.
