"A complete lack of planning" - Jermaine Jenas picks out what has gone wrong at Tottenham

Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Jermaine Jenas is not impressed by the club's current crop.

Jose Mourinho's men are now in ninth place after an underwhelming draw with Bournemouth on Thursday, their European hopes hanging in the balance.

It has been quite the come-down this season for Spurs following last season's Champions League final, but what exactly has gone wrong?

Former winger Jenas brutally dissected the current Tottenham side on BBC 5Live, saying: "I'm kind of in two boats.

"There is a lot of responsibility I put on the players, but I also feel sorry for the players. There is also another part of me that thinks 'was it just (Mauricio) Pochettino getting more out of these players than anyone else can?'

"Maybe these players are just not as good as we all thought, just managed brilliantly by a man that had the club playing the best football they have ever played.

"There are a few things you have to factor in. The new stadium has been an issue in terms of going into the market.

"That's why I was amazed that they hired Jose Mourinho in the first place."

Delving into exactly why Spurs have struggled in recent weeks -winning just two from six since the restart - as well as the season as a whole, Jenas added: "I think, there is a complete lack of planning.

"When they got to that Champions League final, that was an opportunity to cement themselves as a top four side, playing Champions League football year-in, year-out and attract the right people.

"We went into a window talking about (Paulo) Dybala, (Philippe) Coutinho and all these top, world-class players and ended up with nothing...nothing!

"Okay, (Giovani) Lo Celso has come in and don't get me wrong, he looks like a good buy, but Gedson (Fernandes) can't get in the team and the (Tanguy) Ndombele situation is very worrying.

"There is a player in there, but Jose is well within his rights to do what he is doing. He is not happy with the work ethic he is seeing so he is not playing him - that's fair.

"So, you have a team that is defensively ageing, got no pace in it. I watched them against Bournemouth and just thought 'this team used to have flying full-backs'.

"Ben Davies isn't allowed over the halfway line anymore! Serge Aurier is good game, bad game. He is defensively all over the place.

"Then your two centre-halves, (Jan) Vertonghen is going to be leaving the club by the look of it and (Toby) Alderweireld got left on the bench for Eric Dier.

"I don't know what planet everyone else is on but there is no way Eric Dier is better than Toby Alderweireld even half fit.

"So, there are so man issues there that I really hope Jose can fix, I hope it is a success story like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going through now where we can look back and think 'he got it right'.

"But the reality is, I'm watching a mid-table team.

"You can't talk about Europe, they are nowhere near it."
