A community cafe was gutted by fire - here's how you can help get it back on its feet

A community is rallying together to help a popular family-ran cafe after it was destroyed by fire.

Flames ripped through Thairish Cafe in Levenhulme on Sunday morning.

Firefighters were at the scene within seven minutes and managed to extinguish the blaze quickly - but it was too late, the damage had already been done.

Thairish first opened its doors on Stockport Road over 15 years ago.

It was originally ran by Michael Lyons, before he passed away tragically in 2013 and his sister Bernadette Fallon took over.

She was determined to keep her brothers' dream alive, and between Bernadette and her three children, as well as a handful of paid staff, Thairish continued to thrive.

But then over the weekend - which actually marked six years since Michael's death - disaster struck and an oversight of insurance policy fine print meant the family weren't covered for the damaged contents inside.

The only way they would be able to find the money to get back on their feet was to ask the community for help.

Bernadette's children Lindsey, Ciara and John launched a Crowdfunding page to raise money for the repairs and the response was heartwarming.

In just 24 hours, more than £1,100 was donated.

The family has also been inundated with messages of support from customers and others, some offering to help with the clean up, repairs and painting.

"It's been incredible to have so many people wanting to help and we are just so grateful," Lindsey told the Manchester Evening News .

According to Bernadette, the fire started in the kitchen after a deep fat fryer 'burst into flames'.

A member of staff tried to put it out by throwing fire blankets on top, but the blaze was too fierce.

She explained that her brother had been a keen painter, and that many of his original pieces hung on the walls of the cafe in his memory.

"I've not been able to bring myself to look how badly damaged they are," Bernadette added.

"All the electric wiring is fried, the coffee machine is destroyed, even the till was melted. The heat must have been so intense."]

Lindsey posted on the Crowdfunding page: "The cafe has been a key part of the Levenshulme community for many years and we hope that we can pull back from this tragedy with your support."

Several fundraising events have also been organised to help towards the cause, including a family fun day at Klondyke in Levenshulme from 1-5pm on Bank Holiday Monday.
