A closer look at the legal tampering period ahead of free agency

The official start of NFL free agency is set for March 13 at 1:00 p.m. PT, the start of the new league year. By then, many deals will already figuratively be in place by virtue of the league’s legal tampering period which begins on Monday.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. PT on March 11, clubs are allowed to contact and negotiate with the certified agents of players who are set to become unrestricted free agents when their contracts expire on March 13.

While terms and “all aspects of an NFL player contract” can be discussed, no firm agreements can be made or announced until the official start of the new league year.

Players are prohibited from negotiating on their own behalves or visiting with other teams, including players who represent themselves as their own agents.

Violations of the NFL’s anti-tampering policy are considered conduct detrimental to the team and could result in fines or the loss of draft picks.

The legal tampering period closes as of 12:59:59 p.m. PT on Wednesday, March 13.
