A classic Sonic game is getting a remake according to a former Sega exec, and you only need to look at Sonic movie 4 to see why that makes sense

Former Sega of America vice president of entertainment marketing Mike Fischer says he's heard a Sonic CD remake is in the works

In an interview with Sega 16, Fischer speaks at length about his time at Sega, including being around for the launch of the Sega CD, shifting the company from a first to third-party publisher after the fall of the Dreamcast, as well as his time at Namco between his two tenures at Sega. However, right at the end of the interview, he drops a nugget like it's nothing, saying: "I've heard that they're remaking Sonic CD, which would be wonderful. That was my favorite Sonic game."

Sega doesn't have anything in store for Sonic at the moment, at least, nothing that's been publicly announced (there are rumors about a Sonic Frontiers definitive edition release), and while most assume that this year's game will be a sequel to Frontiers – or just the next mainline game in general – the idea of a Sonic CD remake has certainly come out of nowhere.

While Sonic CD was remastered as part of Sonic Origins a few years ago, the timing for something with the classic Sega CD game would make sense, as the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie is set to adapt it. And, as the best Sonic game in 2D (in my eyes, I know Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles and Mania are the fan consensus), I'd be down to see it adapted in a new way, just as long as they keep that all-timer soundtrack – the Japan and Europe version, before you ask.

Of course, Fischer doesn't work at Sega currently, and while it wouldn't be unusual for him to hear about the current goings on at the company, there's always the chance that this is a miscommunication or misunderstanding, so don't get yourself too hyped until we see evidence of it existing.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 director calls it the "best Sonic movie yet" as filming officially wraps.
