A Christmas drive-in cinema with igloo viewing pods is heading to Manchester

A Christmas drive-in cinema will head to Manchester this winter, showing classic festival films as well as newer releases.

At the Drive In will park up at Emirates Old Trafford in late November following a three month-long tour during summer.

For its return, the socially-distanced event will be adding new viewing pods to cater for those without a car.

Visitors will be able to book their own igloo or alpine chalet for up to six people, each one filled with festive decorations.

The drive-in winter wonderland will also have family games, Christmas quizzes, carol karaoke, silent car discos, Santa giveaways, and street food delivered by waiters on rollerskates.

Elf will be one of the films screened at At the Drive In (Publicity Picture)

Winter drinks available will include special cocktails, mulled wine and cider, with the option to go bottomless (for those not driving, obviously).

A giant top-of-the-range screen will be in place at the stadium, showing films including Die Hard, Elf, Love Actually and Home Alone to get the Christmas spirit flowing.

Family-friendly modern blockbusters including Bohemian Rhapsody and Onward will also hit the screen, along with Frozen 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog.

There'll be classics like Edward Scissorhands, E.T., and Dirty Dancing on the schedule too.

The festive edition of At the Drive In will visit London, Manchester and Birmingham between November 25 and December 13.

As with the summer series, cars will parked more than two metres apart and entry will be via licence plate, so there'll be minimal interaction between staff and visitors.

Organiser Alan Crofton said: "We had such a blast touring up and down the country this summer.

"Thousands of people appreciated the chance to do something different during a time when there were virtually no entertainment options available, and also the chance to experience the magic of the drive-in for the first time.

"We can’t wait to do it all again, this time with a festive twist! We are particularly excited about the alpine chalets and domes that will give those without a car the chance to join our drive-in winter wonderland."

Tickets will start at £30 per car, or £15 per person for the chalets and igloos and will go on sale from See Tickets on Friday October 9.

10 free tickets for each screening will be available to NHS staff who sign up to the ballot by Thursday October 8.

There'll also be discounted early bird tickets for anyone who signs up in advance at atthedrive.in/christmas-at-the-drive-in
