A Christmas Carol viewers can't help but draw comparison to the Muppets version

A Christmas Carol has been winning some stellar reviews - a gritty, foul-mouthed interpretation that pays homage to Dickens' novel while also looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes.

The new version, starring Guy Pearce, has taken a few liberties with the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter old miser taught the value of kindness and the festive spirit through a series of hauntings.

It's far from the first crack with a camera at the classic tale...and fans have another version on their minds.

A bunch of them have taken to Twitter because they can't quite get the Muppets version out of their head.

One penned after the first episode: "Mum just asked why there is only one marley brother in this bbc adaptation of a christmas carol, correctly assuming that muppets christmas carol is the original text."

Another joked: "I don't want to be a literary purist but Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol about muppets and any version without muppets just feels intrinsically wrong to me."

A third observed: "Blimey, the Muppets Christmas Carol has changed a bit...#AChristmasCarol."

A fourth noted that the new rendition contains a whole lot of swearing.

"#ChristmasCarol I hope no one is allowing their kids to watch a Christmas Carol thinking it would be like the Muppets version."

The 1992 Muppets Christmas Carol took the original story and added...well, the Muppets.

Starring Michael Caine in the lead, Scrooge's employee Bob Cratchit became Kermit the Frog, his wife Emily Miss Piggy.

Since its early 90s release, it's become a beloved Christmas classic.

The current version, meanwhile, has shocked viewers by adding some colourful language.

"Two unnecessary swear words already?! Why? #AChristmasCarol," one disgruntled viewer wrote.
