A chocolate train

The Swiss eat more chocolate than anyone else - on average, one 500g bar each, every day. As well as brands such as Lindt and Suchard, there are delightful little chocolatiers in nearly every town. The most scenic ways to sample Switzerland's sweet obsession is aboard the chocolate train, which leaves Montreux at 9.36am every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from June to October (Monday to Friday in July and August).

First stop is La Maison du Gruyère (lamaisondugruyere.ch), a dairy famous for its cheeses, followed by free time in town. In the afternoon, a second train takes you to Broc for a guided tour of the Cailler-Nestlé factory (cailler.ch/en), returning to Montreux at 5.33pm. The trip costs CHF 89 (£52) for adults and CHF 59 (£34) for children, including first-class train travel (with coffee and croissants), admission to La Maison du Gruyère, bus transfer between La Maison and the village and an escorted visit to the Cailler-Nestlé factory, including chocolate tasting. Train buffs will adore the panoramic carriages and vintage Pullman coaches. For information and reservations, contact Golden Pass (00 41 840 24 5245, mob.ch)
