A chip shop is deep frying Jaffa Cakes

You may think Jaffa Cakes are already perfect - with no room for improvement - thanks to the spongy base, orangey centre and coating of plain chocolate.

But one chip shop thinks they've managed to top the original 1927 recipe - by coating Jaffa Cakes in batter and deep frying them.

Chippies across the country have been deep drying everything they can think of since the Deep Fried Mars Bar became a thing.

That delicacy was invented in 1992 in the Haven Chip Bar in Aberdeen by John Davie.

Since then people have been deep drying all kinds of chocolate - including Cadbury Creme Eggs - and even mince piues or a whole Christmas Dinner.

Now a chip shop in County Antrim has been putting its fryers to use cooking up battered Jaffa Cakes, reports BelfastLive.

A spokesperson for The Railway Chippy in Antrim said: "They are going down quite well. Some people were a bit sceptical about trying them but once they ate they quite enjoyed it.

"People have already been giving me ideas of what they would like to see at Halloween and Christmas!

"We do these wee random treats, not necessarily to sell them but to see what people think. It's definitely got people talking and they are debating whether to try them or not."

The generous lot are dishing out their battered Jaffa Cakes "for free this time with every order over the weekend if people want to try them".

"I always say you have to try these things for yourself," they added.

They said on Thursday they gave away "about 130"
