There are three days left to apply to run for the Scottish Youth Parliament.

People aged between 14 and 25 who live in Edinburgh and who would like to try to make a difference to young people in Scotland have until Friday to get involved.

There are 12 seats representing Edinburgh open to candidates who receive the most votes at the SYP elections in March.

The SYP is a non-party political organisation made up of 150 young people representing every constituency in Scotland.

It campaigns to highlight the views of Scotland's young people on a national and international stage.

Its members meet three times each year at a range of different locations, including in the main chamber at Holyrood's Scottish parliament. The local council is urging young people to get involved. Edinburgh's education spokesperson Marilyne MacLaren said:

"The Scottish Youth Parliament enables young people to be heard on both national and local issues, and these elections are a great opportunity to develop their citizenship and debating skills as well as demonstrating democracy in action.

"The council is committed to involving young people fully in the life of our city, so they feel that Edinburgh is a place where they can really make a difference."

The SYP's Edinburgh branch has set up a Facebook page to spread the message before Friday's deadline.

Those keen to get involved can download a candidate pack here (PDF) or contact Kelly Faughnan, the local election co-ordinator on 0131 529 6588 or email kelly.faughnan@edinburgh.gov.uk.
