
The US embassy in Bangkok and the Harvey Milk Foundation will host two events in Bangkok on Thursday, with the foundation's co-founder, human- and LGBT-rights advocate Stuart Milk taking part in the public discussion.
From 9.30am at Thammasat University, a talk on "The Advancement Of Civil Rights In The United States And The Work Of The Harvey Milk Foundation" will be presented in partnership with the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty of Social Work, Thammasat University and the Foundation of Transgender Alliance for Human Rights.
The talk is in English with Thai translation and is open to both students and the public. It will be held in Room 302 at the Faculty of Social Work, Tha Phra Chan Campus. Admission is free. For more information, contact 02-205-4490 or email BunnagL@state.gov.
In the afternoon, at Museum Siam, the Documentary Club will present a screening of The Times Of Harvey Milk. Stuart Milk will participate in the post-screening talk, which will be moderated by Ronnapoom Samakkeekarom, lecturer at the Faculty of Public Health, Thammasat University, and president of the Foundation of Transgender Alliance for Human Rights.
The 1984 documentary was directed by Rob Epstein and narrated by Harvey Fierstein and charts the rise of Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected official, to his assassination and its aftermath. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2012.
The film features Thai subtitles and the talk will feature Thai translation. The event starts at 4pm in the museum's Multipurpose Room. Admission is free and open to the public. Contact 02-225-2777 ext 431, 432.
Stuart Milk, nephew of the late politician, founded the Harvey Milk Foundation in 2009 with his uncle's campaign manager Anne Kronenberg. The foundation supports LGBT youth and promotes stories of the LGBT community. Stuart is engaged in global activism, promoting his uncle's story and legacy around the world.
