A Castle Douglas man is on a mission to raise funds for the End Polio Now charity

A Castle Douglas Rotarian is preparing for a marathon fundraising mission to Germany on his 18 year-old motorbike.

Cliff Robertson will set off for the annual Rotary International conference in Hamburg on May 24.

And the veteran biker is hoping his 2,500-kilometre return road trip will pull in the cash.

Mr Robertson is riding for two good causes supported by the town’s Rotary club – one local, one global.

He said: “I’m hoping to raise funds for End Polio Now.

“The charity is within a whisker of achieving its goal of eradicating this debilitating disease globally.

“Closer to home, it was recently announced there would be an all-inclusive play park on the Market Hill.

“The council is putting up £125,000 and it will serve all abilities and enthusiasms of local kids.

“But you get next to nothing for that when you need all ability, fully accessible changing facilities, toilets and play equipment.

“Double that amount and we would have a good play park – and a brilliant play park if we can treble it.

“If the community can raise between £8,000 and £10,000 it would help persuade big funders to come in and support it.”

Mr Robertson, 67, admitted he has mixed feelings about riding to Hamburg and back on his 2001 Honda CB 500 machine.

“I’m feeling a little nervous about it to be honest,” he said. “But you only live once.”

Donations can be made at Mr Robertson’s crowdfunding page at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/cliff-robertson-2.

Alternatively, donations can be handed in at the Heart of Galloway visitor centre in Castle Douglas.

Mr Robertson, who will return to Castle Douglas on June 5, said: “All monies received will be split equally between the two good causes.”
