A car ended up in the Rochdale Canal after driver was chased by police through Oldham

A car rolled into the Rochdale Canal after the driver was chased by police through Oldham.

Officers began to follow a suspected stolen Fiat Punto on Hollins Road at around 5.30pm on Wednesday, April 1.

Following a short pursuit the car ended up rolling into the canal near to Ashton Road West, in Failsworth.

A 19-year-old man was later detained and arrested.

Witnesses said there was a large police presence in Failsworth (ASP)

He is being held on suspicion of driving offences.

There were no reports of any injuries, police said.

An eyewitness said there was a large police presence, with a number of traffic cars, two police vans and police on bikes patrolling the canal path.

A statement released by Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 5.30pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 police began pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle on Hollins Road, Oldham.

"Following a short pursuit the vehicle, a Fiat Punto, was abandoned and rolled into the canal off Ashton Road West, Failsworth.

"A man aged 19 was detained and arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

"There were no reports of injuries. Enquiries are ongoing."
