A cafe on Cardiff's City Road has applied to become a night-time music venue

A new live music venue could be coming to Roath but there are concerns neighbours living nearby would be kept awake at night.

Granny Mac’s, 158 City Road, could soon open as a live music venue, and sell alcohol and serve food in the evening. The Irish cafe is usually only open during the day, and is doing deliveries during the coronavirus lockdown.

Now the cafe has applied for a premises licence from Cardiff council. If granted, the venue could open until 1.30am every night.

Don Logue, applying for the licence, told the council “at least six live music venues have been lost to the Roath area of Cardiff within the recent past”.

But South Wales Police said they would object to the council granting Granny Mac’s a premises licence.

PC Rob Gonstone said the venue should shut at 12am during the week and at 1am on Fridays and Sundays

There are also concerns about how the noise from the music could affect neighbours living nearby.

Simon Thayer, a council neighbourhood services officer, also objected to the licence application.

He said: “The noise from within the venue itself; the patrons frequenting the premises and the possible issues surrounding crowds and queues at the venue will have the potential to cause serious problems to the nearby residential accommodation.

“In addition, I would question the suitability of the building — from a sound insulation view point — to be able to operate as a music venue, without causing the potential for public nuisance.”

The venue would hold a maximum capacity of 159 people.

Councillors on the licensing committee will consider whether to grant the premises licence at a public remote meeting on June 26 — and then decide if the plans for the new venue can go ahead.
