A burst water main in Rochdale has caused hundreds of homes to lose water this morning

Up to one thousand homes in Rochdale have lost access to water this morning, following a burst water main on the A671 Whitworth Road.

The incident was first reported at 9.16am this morning and engineers were on the scene within an hour to investigate the issue.

The number of homes that have either lost water or experienced poor water pressure is predicted to be in "the high hundreds, possibly even more than one thousand".

Polly Blythe, for United Utilities, said: "A leak on Whitworth Road affecting customers in OL12, has been spotted and reported to us.

"We’ve been out to investigate and found this to be the cause for some of you having no water or just a trickle.

"We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have your taps flowing again very soon."

Whitworth Road between Howard Street and St Mary's Gate has closed following the incident.

It is expected to last for "the best part of today".
