A burglar alarm has been going off for a day now and the neighbours are 'absolutely knackered'

One neighbour claims it has been ringing for 24 hours straight.

Others say the noise is so bad they've not slept a wink.

The culprit?

A burglar alarm, which since Easter Sunday hasn't stopped ringing.

And to the annoyance of hundreds of people in North Shields , it is still going strong on Easter Monday.

"It is so bad I've had to move the mattress so I could sleep," said one tired local.

The siren is coming from a terraced property in Belford Terrace.

"It has been going on for about 24 hours now," claimed another, although others claimed it started closer to 1pm on Sunday.

Regardless though, the alarm has definitely been ringing for too long.

The Code of Practice on Noise from Audible Intruder Alarms 1982 act states alarm systems should be fitted with an automatic cut-off device to stop them after 20 minutes.

If you do not have a cut-off device fitted, you are expected to have nominated keyholders who can help police silence the alarm withing 20 minutes.

ChronicleLive contacted Northumbria Police to see if they'd been notified about it.

The force is yet to respond, however none of the locals we spoke too this morning said they had called the police.

"I'm absolutely knackered," admitted one woman.

"Because it was Easter the shops were closed so I couldn't even go and buy ear plugs, although I felt like getting a hotel at one point last night.

"It is pretty awful and it feels like it won't ever stop but the only good thing was I didn't have work this morning otherwise I think I'd be calling in sick."
